LCT, stamp duty and on-road costs on a vehicle sale
How a deal works out GST, luxury car tax, stamp duty and government fees, and where you keep the tables that drive them.
Where it is
- Dealer Management → Vehicle Sales — The Tax and Government charges parts of a deal.
Settings for this
- Dealer Management → Settings (Taxes & fees tab) — Tax categories, LCT thresholds, registration and government fees, stamp duty bands. CSV import and export.
- Dealer Management → Settings (Dealer & contract tab) — Statutory state (the default duty state) and confirming the duty scales are current.
How a deal is taxed
- GST is on the full taxable price. Government charges are GST-free.
- LCT is its own line, worked out on the price after the discount.
- A trade-in is separate: it reduces the balance, never the GST.
- On an agency (consignment) sale for a consignor who isn't GST-registered, the car isn't your taxable supply: your GST is on the commission only, and no LCT is charged.
Tax category
Each deal has a Tax category (light vehicle, light commercial and so on). It is picked from the car's Specs for tax & registration on the stock unit (GVM, body type, seats). Choose another from the list to override it; the hint says what the specs suggest. The category decides whether LCT applies and which registration fees and duty bands are used.
The first time, the page may offer to load the default categories. Confirm them in Dealer Management → Settings → Taxes & fees.
LCT
Pick the LCT category: Not luxury, Standard or Fuel-efficient (3.5 L/100km or less), each showing this financial year's threshold. The page tells you when:
- the car is over two years old, so LCT doesn't apply;
- the buyer quotes their ABN to resell the car (a dealer buying stock): choose Not luxury;
- the category is set up without LCT but the contract still carries it.
Stamp duty
- Under the duty calculator pick the Registering state (defaults to your statutory state). Queensland and the ACT also ask for Cylinders and whether it is a hybrid or electric (filled from the car's specs).
- Press Calculate duty, then Apply to contract. It fills Stamp duty, Duty calculated on (the full GST-inclusive price) and the state.
The result is a suggestion: concessions (primary producer, disability) aren't in the tables, so you can always type over it. A duty figure can't be applied after the price or category changes; calculate again.
Registration, CTP, plates and other fees
On a quote, the fees fill from your fee table for the state and tax category. A figure someone typed is never overwritten: press Apply table fees to take the table's figures. Add any other fee (transfer, inspection and so on) with its description and amount.
The tables (Dealer Management → Settings → Taxes & fees)
Open Dealer Management → Settings and choose the Taxes & fees tab.
- Tax categories: Add category with a GVM range, body types, seats, sort order and whether LCT applies.
- Luxury car tax thresholds: the platform's figures per financial year. Add your figure overrides a year for your business only.
- Registration & government fees: per state and category; flat, per kg of GVM or a % of value. Add fee, filter by state, Import CSV or Export CSV.
- Stamp duty bands: per state, cylinder class and category. Add band, Import CSV or Export CSV.
The seeds are defaults: confirm every figure with your state authority. Changing them needs the Settings edit permission.
On the Dealer & contract tab, Stamp duty scales says which financial year the scales were last confirmed for. When it asks, check your state revenue office and press I've checked — these are current. That records who looked; it changes no rate. Reload built-in scales restores the built-in bands.
If something's not right
- "You can read these tables; changing them needs the Settings → edit permission": ask an owner or admin.
- The duty looks a year old: confirm or update the scales on the Dealer & contract tab.
- LCT shows on a car that shouldn't carry it: check the tax category and the LCT category, then save.
