Import contacts from a CSV
Upload a CSV of customers, decide what happens to ones you already have, and import them in three steps.
Where it is
- Open CRM → Contacts and press Import CSV, or go straight to Import Contacts.
- Upload: press Download Template for a file with the right columns, fill it in, then drop it on the page or click to browse.
- Required: full_name (or name). It's split into first and last name at the first space.
- Optional: email, phone, state, postcode, company_name, notes, lifecycle_stage, lead_source, tags and status.
- Separate tags with semicolons, e.g. VIP;fleet.
- Review: you see New contacts, Duplicates (by email) and Total rows. For each duplicate choose Skip, Merge (fill blanks) or Create anyway, or set them all at once (Skip all, Merge all, Create anyway). Merge only fills the existing record's empty fields; it never overwrites.
- Import: press Import N contacts. You see how many were created, merged and skipped.
Good to know
- Duplicates are matched by email only. Rows without an email are always created, so tidy the file first or merge afterwards (Merge duplicate contacts).
- company_name is saved in the contact's notes. It doesn't create or link a company. Link the people to their company afterwards (Companies).
- Imported contacts are not opted in to marketing. Record consent you hold with Bulk opt-in on the list, choosing the legal basis (SMS and email consent).
If something's not right
- "Required column Name / full_name not found": the first row must be the column headings, with a name column.
- "Row N: Invalid email": fix that address (or clear it) and upload again.
- Nothing happens when you drop the file: it must be a .csv. Save the spreadsheet as CSV first.
