2. Running the PDI: the QC step

The PDI itself is the job’s 1 · QC step: every line answered honestly, the evidence attached, and a pass only when the car really is right. A fail stops the car going anywhere until it’s fixed and re-checked.

Where it is

Settings for this

Who this is for: technicians who do the PDI, and the workshop managers who check it.

The buttons on the QC step are the same on every job; the Workshop course, lesson 7, walks through them. This lesson is about doing a PDI properly.

Before you start

  1. Open the right job. The heading under Quality Control Checklist shows the list's name in small print. If it reads "Quality control · BuildTrack default" or your everyday QC list, the job isn't a Pre-delivery inspection job: fix its Job Type first.
  2. Press Start work at the top, so the job is In progress.
  3. Clock on. A PDI made from a stock unit comes with one line, Pre-delivery inspection, on the Work tab. Press Start on it. The time you clock is what the PDI costs (lesson 4), and it counts towards your Gold.

Where to find it

On the job, the QC & Handover tab, then 1 · QC.

Step by step

  1. Go line by line, with the car in front of you. Answer each line as you check it, not from memory at the end.
  2. Pass / Fail / N/A. N/A means "this car doesn't have one", never "I didn't check it".
  3. Measurements. Type the reading you actually got. If it's outside the pass range, the line fails by itself and reads Out of range.
  4. Evidence. Where a line says · required, press Add photo or Add note. Where it says · on fail, the photo or note is needed only if the line fails. Photograph the fault, not the whole car.
  5. Work verification. The box above the list shows the job's labour and parts from the Work tab. Press Finish ✓ on your task line first, or the box lists it as open.
  6. Sign, if the list asks: Technician sign-off.
  7. All good? Press Save & Pass QC ✓. The list locks and the step reads 1 · QC ✓.

If Save & Pass QC ✓ is greyed out, the yellow box above it ("n things still needed") says exactly what's missing: a line not answered, a photo or note required, a signature, or a failed line.

When something fails

A PDI that finds a fault has done its job. Don't hide it.

  1. Answer the line Fail (or type the reading that's out of range), with its photo or note.
  2. Under Defect Notes / Rework Required, write what's wrong and what's needed, such as "Chip in windscreen, passenger side. Needs repair before delivery."
  3. Press Save & Fail QC. The step reads 1 · QC ✗ and the job shows QC failed.
  4. Get it fixed. If the fix is a job of its own, put this job on hold with Hold… › In QC or Waiting on parts while you wait.
  5. When it's fixed, come back to 1 · QC, re-check the failed line, change it to Pass and press Save & Pass QC ✓.

What a failed QC stops

  • The job can't be marked ready. Mark ready shows "QC failed — fix and re-check before marking ready", and pressing it says "QC failed — resolve the failed checks before handover."
  • 2 · Delivery can't be finished: Mark Ready for Delivery reads "· QC must pass first".
  • On a deal, the unit shows Pre-delivery inspection not passed yet (lesson 4).

PDI discipline

  • Never Mark ready without the QC. BuildTrack only blocks Mark ready once a QC has been saved. A job with no QC saved can still be marked ready, and on a deal a PDI job that's Ready counts as passed. Pass QC first, every time.
  • Two sets of eyes, if you can. Where the workshop has the people, have someone other than the technician who fitted the accessories do the PDI.
  • Don't pass with exceptions. A note in Defect Notes lets QC pass while Work verification still shows open lines. On a PDI, finish the lines instead.

Where it ends

1 · QC ✓: the inspection has passed. Next comes the handover (lesson 3).

Lesson 2 of 5 in Pre-delivery and handover. Previous: 1. What a pre-delivery inspection is, and setting its checklist. Next: 3. Delivery and handover with the customer.
