3. Quantities and scrap
Quantities records how many units are through the step so far, good and scrapped, with a note. Record as you go on a long run; the progress bar and the Production TV follow.
Where it is
Who this is for: everyone who works on steps; the counts are what the office and the TV board run on.
Quantities
Press Quantities on a running or paused card. The sheet asks for:
- Good: units through this step and right, since you last recorded.
- Scrap: units ruined at this step. They are gone from the order; the office sees them against the step and decides whether to make more.
- Note: what happened, when it matters (why the scrap, what was short). A note is required when both counts are zero, so a note on its own is allowed.
Press Record. The counts add to the step's totals; the progress bar on the card moves; the Production TV shows the step's share done.
When to record
- Short runs: record once, when you finish.
- Long runs: record at natural breaks (a pallet, a shift, a bundle) so the board is honest and whoever takes over knows where you were. A paused card keeps its counts.
- Scrap: record it when it happens, with the note, while you remember why.
What the counts do
- The order's Record output (the office's end) is separate: that is finished units going into stock. Your counts are the step's progress and its scrap.
- A step with its planned quantity through shows a full bar, but is not finished until someone presses Finish step (lesson 4).
- Scrap at a step reduces what later steps can expect, so the office may add units or accept fewer. Your note is what they read.
